<p><span id="more-217"></span>What disturbs most of the people, is the use of the word<strong> _Free</strong>_&#8230; Android _is_ an open platform, for everybody&#8230; Yet Motorola announces it as it if it were one of Apples upgrade plans, where you have to pay to receive updates. I&#8217;m not sure if Motorola understands the meaning of the word Open Source. The only reason that they may use the word free in this context is that, they locked the boot-loader, thus disabling most of the functions of an open system. Almost an year after they announced the Motorola Milestone, which helped them get back on the top list of mobile phones. After the fiasco, of people in Europe finding out that the boot loader is locked, they reasoned that it was about protecting intellectual property. I hope most of you saw the conundrum that is hidden in this message. Most of us hope, that with the android 2.3 / 3.0 upgrade the boot loader lock will be disabled, since there are more than enough people interested in creating custom roms for the Milestone, when Motorola is ready to shutdown the support department for MM.</p>
<p>Not to mention that Motorola claims that the Dext does not support all the features of 2.0 / 2.2, which is interesting since the Milestone can handle it without problems. not to mention the G1, the grandfather of all android devices.</p>
<p>It seems that there are still firms in this world, who don&#8217;t understand the meaning of open source system. Thou it may correct, that most people who buy mobile phones do not know what the possibilities are, yet some of us do&#8230; And it was also the reason why we decided to buy an android phone.</p>
<p>What confuses most of us, is the fact, that the Motorola Milestone was sold as a phone without limits and support for flash, yet Motorola decided that is was okay for us to be decieved and yet Motorola delayed the announcement of flash support by 4 months&#8230; What can be said in such a case? not much really, other than suggesting that if you are somewhat tech savvy that you won&#8217;t support this firm, their hardware possibilities are next to limitless, yet _some_ firms decide that they should be limited.</p>
<p>About the timetable, this is actually pretty impressive, since the last time they decided to update the phone, and fix some minor updates, like the alarm not starting, took them only 4 months&#8230; Thou the most annoying bug is still not fixed, just make a call with your headset, unplug the headset during the call, end the call and just wait for the music to start&#8230; Motorola, you really deserve an applause for that&#8230;</p>

It&#8217;s the boot.img (kernel+init) from the Telus SHOLS_U2_03.10.0 firmware.<br />
Kernel  version: 2.6.29-omap1 rkg683@ca25rhe56 #1<br />
Tested on SHOLS_U2_02.31.0  RTEU.</p>

Made  with SBF Recalc and hexedit.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So, i kind of had a slow Sunday, so i decided to enjoy the whole The Chronicles of Riddick franchise. It started with the movies (Pitch Black  -&gt; Dark Fury and The Chronicles of Riddick). Then i remembered, that about a year ago, i got the game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, what started at around 1400 hours on a sunday afternoon, ended 0100 on Monday. After i finished the game, i looked back under the extras menu and noticed that i had only found about half of the smokes that you can in the game. Read on, on how to unlock the extras and view some nice concept art for both the games and movies</p>

<p>GO to your profile directory and open the <strong>_profile</strong> file with notepad / nano / anykind of text editor find the line <strong>*GAME_EXTRACONTENTKEY</strong> (should be line 97)</p>

<strong>Update</strong>: One major bug I&#8217;ve come across with both the Beta-DACH and Retail EU versions is, that when using the headset and you unplug it while calling someone, the music starts playing. On Motorola support forums other people say that it also happens on other occasions too, when disconnecting the headset.<span id="more-173"></span>Sorry, i&#8217;m lazy tonight, so i won&#8217;t go into much detail, thou it&#8217;s easy -&gt;</p>

<p>First up, you can remove the Island limitation easily with your favorite hex editor ( If you don&#8217;t have one, get <a href="http://www.bpsoft.com/downloads/">Hex Workshop</a> ), just open the JustCause2.exe with it and</p>
<p>Goto <strong>03F206D</strong></p>
<p>Change <strong>75</strong> to <strong>EB</strong></p>
<p>Oh and you can disable the time limit&#8230; Still haven&#8217;t found a way for it in the exe&#8230; but&#8230; <a href="http://www.cheatengine.org/">Cheat Engine</a> to the rescue</p>

<li>Load up The Game, Play a little bit, Press <strong>F1</strong> to open the <strong>PDA</strong> and remember the <strong>time</strong></li>
<li>Alt+Tab into windows and start cheat engine, Select the game from process list</li>
<li>Choose<strong> &#8216;Unknown initial value&#8217;</strong> from the<strong> </strong>&#8216;Scan type<strong>&#8216; </strong>drop-down list,<strong> &#8217;4 Bytes&#8217;</strong>, and hit the &#8216;First Scan&#8217; button.</li>
<li>Go in-game again, un-pause and let some time go by.</li>
<li>Open the <strong>PDA</strong>, and check how many seconds have gone by.</li>
<li> Alt-tab  back to CheatEngine and search for a new value, this time a<strong> &#8216;Value  increased by&#8230;&#8217; </strong>, and enter the the time in seconds that  passed. Then Hit<strong> &#8216;Next Scan&#8217;</strong>.</li>
<li>Repeat, until you find your culprit.</li>
<li>Double Click the value to add it in the list below and freeze it.</li>
</ul>

<blockquote><p>Motorola &#8220;Milestone&#8221; the  smart-phone with a clear limitation!</p>
<p>The  main purpose of this article is to discuss certain details and  inconsistencies with the European Motorola flagship product &#8211; the  Motorola Milestone.<br />
Lately Motorola has started to advertise the  Milestone aggressively and comprehensively. &#8220;Unlimited Possibilities&#8221;  and &#8220;Smart-phone with no limits&#8221; are listed as the main features of this  device.</p>
<p>Granted, using this device really gives the feeling of a  milestone, when it comes to design and finish. The overall quality is  very good.<br />
The phone itself is also a milestone in other aspects:  Android enjoys a growing community of fans, main points being the many  possibilities to customize the Open source OS. The main highlights of  this scene are Custom ROMs, which can change every possible aspect of  the phone, from the UI appearance to adding new kernel modules and new  drivers. The custom ROMs also add a possibility of a superuser acount by  default. Features and functions can be taken from one phone and added  to another one. It has also been noticed that the Custom-ROMs run much  faster and much more stable than the standard ROMs of the phone.  However, changing the ROM results in a loss of the manufacturer provided  warranty. This is not a problem for most members of this scene &#8212; also  known as &#8220;modders&#8221; &#8212; since most of them are driven by the wish to be in  control of the smart-phone and have total control over the software.</p>
<p>With most Android mobile-phones it is possible to flash a custom  ROM, even with the sister model of the Milestone, which was released in  the USA under the name &#8220;Motorola Droid&#8221;. Both of the models are  identified by the same hardware codename &#8220;Sholes&#8221;, possibly the internal  name for the device.</p>
<p>Now for the downside of the Milestone:  Motorola restricted large parts of the modification freedom. They have  ensured that this model can only load signed ROMs. The signature can  only be checked by a special key, hard-coded into the hardware. Because  of this we cannot start custom ROMs on the German and possibly on every  other Milestone. None of the European customers expected that &#8211; and why?  It was known that the same device was successfully modified in the USA,  the only difference is the radio-module. Of course the internet  communities are not happy with this. There have been many discussions in  the Motorola Customer Center, Developer Forum and Facebook page about  this.</p>
<p>At this point, we&#8217;d like to point out that Motorola  possibly has some custom software on there, and possibly wants to defend  this. Of cource this is just an assumption, since Motorola hasn&#8217;t  released a clear statement towards this, therefore we&#8217;ll leave this  point open. Technically it shouldn&#8217;t be hard for them to give us an  update which frees the boot-loader. We are ready to give our IMEI and  the device&#8217;s serial number to Motorola, to forfeit the warranty and  delete the licensed software and in the future refer to their device as a  developer phone. The same is possible with the Google&#8217;s/HTC&#8217;s &#8220;Nexus  One&#8221;. You just have to enter an special command to unlock the  boot-loader, then you get a message on the phone, which states that you  are forfeiting your warranty, if you continue with the process.</p>
<p>The  Official responses from Motorola are saying nothing more to us than:  It&#8217;s not our responsibility to discuss why the American model has an  open boot-loader and the European one doesn&#8217;t have one. To make matters  worse, Motorola is saying that they are not going to implement and/or  release this &#8220;developer function&#8221;. This raises the question: Is the  Droid a Motorola device or not? Since it _has_ this function! Given the  difficult situation of Motorola&#8217;s mobile phone division, to treat  American and European customers so differently is beyond our  understanding.</p>
<p>Thanks to lengthy trials, the scene has managed  to modify some parts of the software, but the elementary parts are still  locked for us. Contrary to previous experiences, replacing and  modifying the kernel is not possible on the &#8220;Milestone&#8221;. This fact  decreases our chances to fix problems, after Motorola stops supporting  the Milestone (which is a fairly common practice, when bringing a new  device to the market, with the same hardware specs, to push the sales).  The Community is more likely to purchase the successor of the Milestone,  if they would honor our requests.<br />
What would also have been  acceptable for the Community, would be if this fact had been known from  the beginning.  If this were the case, some of us would not have bought  this device, instead they would have chosen one from the competition  (This is actually something that Motorola suggests as an alternative).<br />
The  customers outside the USA feel handicapped, for a reason.</p>

Maybe this gives us hope regarding rest of the world. Since the droid&#8217;s update was pulled. <p>The Good news is, you can easily download the New 2.1 launcher apk to get the stilish 3d app drawer and replace the default one of 2.0.1. It has worked without any problems on my 2.0.1 / rooted milestone. Also you get 5 home screens and the new preview tabs for all screens.</p>
<p>Step-By-Step</p>
<ul>
<li>Download the new <a href="http://sipsik.net/foo/Launcher.apk">Launcher.apk</a> ( http://sipsik.net/foo/Launcher.apk )</li>
<li>Save it to sdcard</li>
<li>Use <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530271&amp;highlight=root+file+explorer">Root-Explorer</a> to backup the old Launcher.apk from <strong>/system/app/Launcher.apk</strong> to e.g. <strong>/sdcard/backup/Launcher.apk</strong></li>
<li>Copy the new Launcher.apk to /system/app/<strong>L</strong>auncher.apk note -&gt; Launcher with a big <strong>L not l</strong></li>
<li>Change the Premissions to 0644 (rw-r&#8211;r&#8211;)</li>
<li>Restart phone and enjoy the new launcher with 5 home screens : )</li>
