2.0.1 Milestone / Finally

Well, after about 2 months delay, Motorola managed to send out the update for Milestone. Still we’re abit behind the USoA, but anyways…

The Root is still functional, you just have to reapply it after updating to 2.0.1 Those who’re habing trouble reaching the update servers:

http://direct.motorola.com/GER/SoftwareUpdateSummary.asp?country=DEU&language=GER&web_page_name=SUPPORT&strCarrierId=&strPhone=MILESTONE&strCable=Micro

Oh, And it seems that motorola is testing the 2.1 / 2.0.2 update for milestone. Pics and Info @Android-Hilfe

Milestone Rooted! Yay’z

Well, it seems that the germans finally did it. They rooted the milestone in collaberation with Androidiani.com

Milestone rooted.

Hihi, and all of that before the 2.0.1 ( :

Simple steps are:

1) Download rename the .zip file to update.zip and save it at the root dir of your SDCard

2) Turn off the Phone

3) Hold The Camera Button and Powerbutton until you see /!\

4) Play with the volume rocker until you get to the menu

5) Select update.zip and Flash away ; )

Since i’m hyper- and radioactive because of this news (and the 8 espressos i drank on my way to work), i’ll try it out right away, local mirror should be available shortly.

Fun Fact

Here’s one for you:

Google was attacked, by using a flaw in Internet Explorer, on the other hand, they answered the attacks with a simple hack-back, and found out that the attacks came from China. So the question is, who supported it, since it must take some organization since, c’mon you’re talking about google, think about it.

P.S. next time when you think about attacking google…. Think again

Milestone status update, again.

Well. The CES week was fun, alot of gadgets sprung up, there were even a few interviews with the Motorola chief, this being an American show, they didn’t mention anything at all about our european version of the DROiD. Today they finally gave us an official word, besides the constant secretive emails and support forum queries. They announced on facebook, that the 2.0.1 update is on the way and 2.1 is also in the works. This is actually good news, for those who want to root it, since with smaller updates (the size of the 2.1 update is still unknown since there are no 2.1 updates available…) we can also include our own unsigned code to the zip. Bringing us closer and closer to the ultimate goal: Rooting (and for me wifi-tethering, since they said that they have no official plans for wifi tethering, thou they sell it as an aoption over the pond.)

Well yeah, finally i have a reason to logon to my facebook account, other than leveling at Mafia Wars:

Attention Android lovers. The 2.01 update is on its way for all Milestone users – watch this space for more info. The Android 2.1 upgrade for MILESTONE is also on its way and will be ready in the next 2 months. We can confirm that DEXT will get the Android 2.1 upgrade as well – once we have the timing for this, will let you know here

It’s officcial, Android hates america.

Well. Yeah it’s true. Google’s owns “super phone”. The Nexus One, that was announced three days ago supports multitouch only in Europe (Vodafone, is the only announced carrier atm). It’s fun that we Europeans have something that the Americans want but can’t have on the app phone market. Long live the all mighty apple with their patents over the pond : )

HTC also announced their first dumbphone, ironically named the HTC Smart. Wich is running on Qualcoms BREW os. should be fun.

Via Engadget

Oh, and there are some new SonyEricsson handsets on the way, besides the X10. One of them seems to be a mini X10, so. Yeah another ten points for creativity to SE.

Last but not least, the Else Emblaze was also demoed at CES ’10, this is probably the only interesting announcement that was made there (yes i’m not into consumer electronics, who cares if you have the thinnest LCD TV, i still have a 26″ CRT TV, since i have no need for an 1080p thingy, why use it if there are no (true) HD-TV senders here in Germany. For my modded x360 you may say? No thanks. I personally see no difference that would justify buying a new TV. If my old one breaks, and i have to buy a new one. Well then yea, since the LCD TV’s are cheaper than the CRT ones.

*gets back on original topic*

So the Emblaze. from specifications it’s not that much different from my Milestone [ A853 ], same processor, a bit smaller display, 3.47″,  and features, e.g. 16gb dedicated flash memory in the thing. What’s amazing about this phone is the OS, it’s designed to be used with one hand and it just looks _shiny_ . Also the blue vs. black color scheme is fancy.

Head over to gizmodo to see the full scoop.

Fancy UI is all that it takes to amaze me.

MiLESTONE root update. DROiD is not alone, updated #3.

Yes… It’s been a crazy few weeks for me, I wanted to update the status of the MiLESTONE / DROiD root.
The good news regarding this is, that Motorola has confirmed that the update is coming in January 2010. Witch means a few more weeks of winter for us European users. It’s fun to see that due to verizons support of the best Google phone (available now, as of dec. 09) leaves the unsupported phone ( MiLESTONE ) with out updates ( The European model also lacks by Google logo on it. It’s just another motorla phone… ffs : ( ) . There are many known bugs, but Motorola officials on moto forum have not said the exact release date for the update, but when i emailed the support they assured me that it’s coming. Just a shame, since the both models are the same, only with a different radio ( oh and did i mention that the European version has _no_ customization at all, so no verizon/amazon apps on the phone, that we PC users call bloat-ware ).

On the other hand, the HTC Passion ( also known as firestone / Google Nexus One), which i also dreamed of instead of the DROiD just like the htc hd2, seems to be coming in January. 500+ USD for the unsubsidized version, a bit better screen than the DROiD [ A855 ] / Milestone [ A853 ] and the all powerful snapdragon 1ghz processor. Only time will tell. There’s an Google Android event on the 5th of January. Maybe only 2.1 update? ( Maybe this is also the reason why Motorola waited? *hint*pray*hint* ). Who knows, Also there will be the CES in january, where motorola is probably gonna introduce the Shoeles tablet version. Fun to see how much has happened in a week. Let’s see what the new year brings ; )
[Update2] Engadget got their own Nexus One to review and the Nexus One rom that has been floating around the internet, has been rooted… confirmed by some of google phone users. Damn.
I can’t wait for it, to all of you, have a _shiny_ new year!

[EDiT] It seems that Motorola is planing a nice 4.3″ touch screen device, unfortunately it’s just unclear which os it will have, since the mock-ups remind me of the old UIQ (SonyEricsson) devices : )

It’s DONE!

Avatar, the one movie that is hard to analyze.

[Warning spoilers ahead]
So. This Sunday i saw the newest James Cameron movie. Avatar. James has a history of making blockbuster hits. e.g. Terminator, Aliens, Terminator II: Judgment Day, Abyss, Titanic, etc… (Yes I’m a bit of a movie freak, i usually watch 6-10 movies a week). So it’s not a surprise that it raked in an jaw dropping 232,000,000 USD$ world wide, over the first weekend (Comparing to the 300M+$ Budget, it’s a success). Most of blogs have already mentioned avatar, so we could also call it hyped, almost over hyped like The Dark Knight. So… what are my emotions about the movie, As an above average movie freak.
It’s hard to say. Since the movie _is_ very _shiny_, i mean the experience of the 3d, is a truly new level of shinyness and cute. It’s no wonder that J. Cameron had to basically invent a new Camera, that you can take with you (e.g. usually the cameras have a processing engine directly in them, but this makes them clunky, and he had to convince Sony or witch ever manufacturer to create one for him to be a bit more portable and easier to use[i imagine just make the processing unit external, e.g. Lot's of cables ; )]). Pandora and the level of detail is unbelievably stunning. And just to think that they barely finished the movie before screenings. If i was in his position i’d released it later. But it’s James F. Cameron. He can basically do whatever he wants no matter what the budget, being a legend and all.
So, why is this film hard to see for what it is? It’s too obvious, the story has no depth in my opinion. I mean it’s not bad, but it is easy to see what comes next, it may be that I’m used to the idea of happy endings etc… but, in most of the movies it’s hard to make the story leave me at an aw, or make my jaw drop. It is just too predictable. If a hero is captured then and you know the running time. It’s is hard not to think about the many possibilities to come, therefore it’s hard for the screen writer to impress me. I’m just used to using my head to think, no matter what. TBH, it ruins a lot of movies for me, but it just happens. And most of the movies in avatar were predictable. E.g. as Jake Sully was held captive by his commanding officer, i already knew who and why he was going to be rescued [Spoiler alert: It was Michelle Rodriguez character: Trudy Chacon]. There are also a lot of similar story lines, e.g. Controlling a remote controlled Avatar (Surrogates / The Matrix anyone?). Also the thing about the parallels with Dances With Wolves (For those who don’t know: Integrating with a another society, challenges that lie ahead, trust, etc…) The regular human emotions when person with an different background comes to your group and tries to integrate with it… They are just too obvious.

This is all true, if you have watched alot of movies, i mean it’s hard to come up with something different all in all. But still. The movie is _freaking-awesome_ i can’t reject this fact. It is truly stunning and I’d suggest that you spend a few extra bucks to see it in 3D. Belive me, it’s a whole different experience than the films you have seen in 3D now. It’s a game changer that is for sure. Doubt it’s a one that will change your life, but if you understand what I’m talking about. Nothing is perfect, but this is as near as you can come to a good movie : )

DiRT2, or how you can be an asshole driver and get away with it

...

Shiny polaroid version of the car you start off with... they even mention CmR, rip.

I have to say it, I’m not the best driver around. There is a certain lead-foot syndrome i seem to suffer under. But i manage, i haven’t been in a accident. Yet every time a new car game comes out and prizes itself with a new level of realism, i just have to try it.

First off, it leaves an impression that it is actually easy to become a top race/dirt/cross/off-road driver. It starts with a fancy intro of all the top and popular Cross rally drivers who live today (Ken Block, Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra, who all seem to work for Subaru Racing Team America…) And they act like they’re your buddys, wich seems very very _creepy_, thou it could be my paranoia kicking in. After you finish couple of races and reach level 10 you are handed money on a golden platter, wth is up with that? Is it really this easy? Doubt it… : >

Yes i know that there are points missing, but i’m kind of frustrated with windows right now, since i was almost finished with the game,

Going fast, combined with a wall... not a nice view.

until my win7x64 installation crapped out. I thought no problem, just copy save games and reinstall…. but noooooo windows live annoys me. Sure it’s a nice way to get players online with trophys and such, but… I can’t copy my savegames :  ( this means I’m back at lvl10, a nice jump down from level40….

Sooo… when it comes to graphics it is very _shiny_ they even used something that J.J. Abrams overused in his last film: Lens-flare! The detail is nice, although I’m playing with DX10 (8800GS ftw!) graphics. What they really improved from the last DiRT was the Damage model. it has alot more detail. This is what suprised me, and again got me in the game. Destruction is truly _shiny_

Below you’ll see some examples of the game play… More videos are reachable if you click on _more_ HTML5 is fun : D
Oh and there is also a random picture gallerywhich should be online in about 3 hours… make that 6 days later…

Removed pics and videos, you can use google if you want to see the qual… just a waste of space for me : >

Time flies…

… atleast in the computer world…

Only a month later, and o2 finally has the HTC HD2 as coming soon, this was originaly planned instead of the Milestone, i even asked o2 if they were gonna add it to their lineup, but… yeah they said no.

Also when i’m already ranting about the phones & manufactures:

  • Motorola’s support emails are kind of hard to answer to, every mail client handles reply formating differently, i tried with outlook, Thunderbird (2&3) and even the normal windows live, still no confirmation or new information : ( looks like i have to email them again. Oh and as i was trolling their forums, they are still looking for information for us unlocked milestone users, about the updates, and it is also unclear when and how we will get it : >
  • Google is testing their new phone in the field, no one knows what it’s going to be named, but it is based on the HTC Dragon with an 1ghz Qualcom chip set, like the HD2. They handed it out to their coworkers, so that they can test it, it looks cute and _shiny_, just like a Google phone should = ) On other hand, it is just like my milestone, but without an keyboard, even the menubar is the same. Either it’s coming to verizon in the us (who have the droid series, all of which have the same menu-bar) or Google suggested a standardized menu for the designers.

on a side note thank you mc_intkam from the att for notifying me about an security flaw in my server, kudos dude.

Motorola Milestone rooted… Only for DROiD for now. Update!

Well not this kind of rooting, more like jailbreaking...

Well not this kind of rooting, more like jailbreaking...

Well it seems that our good friends over the pond got an update, which, thanks to Motorola allowing to install small unsigned updates, has given them a way to root the phone, congratz.

More at AllDroid

Unfortunately here in EU land we still have to wait, since motorola uses different keys for updates. I tried it and had no such luck. : (

But the good news is, that when the update comes to us, we have a way to root it.

Also, it seems that the EU version, that i got has a different way to get to restore – update menu. Where as on the American Version you have to shut the phone down, press X and then power the device on, i had no such luck with my Milestone. Instead after some messing around, i found out that I have to Hold the dedicated camera button and then power the device on. Then I have to hold then volume rocker  up and while holding it down i have to press the camera button again, to get to the menu. Small differences, but they do make a difference.

So… no matter what, we seem to have our first steps towards root. Can’t wait to use my GPRS connection over WiFi.

P.S. Motorola finally answered to my driver problems. They just sent a link to music management, i already sent another reply, maybe some day they will understand that their driver package is broken for Win7 x64, and that the software does not recognize the phone.

_yay_ for moto support.

Well it’s done -> http://sipsik.net/?p=130

And 2.0.1 Update -> http://sipsik.net/?p=137
