So some people have been having problems with the newest 2.1 update for the Motorola Milestone, for some reason, the alarm doesn’t ring from time to time.
No worries, there’s a fix : )
The solution:
It’s the boot.img (kernel+init) from the Telus SHOLS_U2_03.10.0 firmware.
Kernel version: 2.6.29-omap1 rkg683@ca25rhe56 #1
Tested on SHOLS_U2_02.31.0 RTEU.
Read on to see how to fix it : )

Alot shinier than the old camera interface
Here is a short change log:
- Live Wallpapers (Yes, the most “important” feature…)
- 5 Home Screens (finally!)
- NO, i repeat no shiny launcher like the N1 has : (
- Mp3 Skipping Fixed (there is a god)
- Browser lag fixed
- a _very_ shiny Camera interface, me like.
- moar
Thou some people from LatAm still have no 2.01 update… WTG Moto!

Update: One major bug I’ve come across with both the Beta-DACH and Retail EU versions is, that when using the headset and you unplug it while calling someone, the music starts playing. On Motorola support forums other people say that it also happens on other occasions too, when disconnecting the headset. (more…)

Since the European version of DROiD doesn’t support an open boot-loader, the German users have decided to get creative. They’ve started an kind of awareness campaign. To inform people who are interested in android that the device that they are interested in, kind of goes against the Open Source Software idea
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.

So, Motorola Announced today at the MWC 2010, that the milestone is gonna be the first android 2.1 enabled device in spain. The ETA is mid-march 2010. Maybe this gives us hope regarding rest of the world. Since the droid’s update was pulled. Also, the things we know from Google’s N1, ergo Livewallpapers, new launcher, won’t be a part of the update, atleast for the Americans.
Barcelona, Mobile World Congress 2010, Feb. 15 2010 –– Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the launch of MILESTONE™ in Spain to become the first Android 2.1 phone in this market. MILESTONE will be available for all the Spanish consumers from mid-march.

- Interestingly, the home screen’s still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn’t adopt the Nexus One’s rotating 3D grid of app icons — it’s still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
- No active wallpapers. Bummer
Via Engadget
The Good news is, you can easily download the New 2.1 launcher apk to get the stilish 3d app drawer and replace the default one of 2.0.1. It has worked without any problems on my 2.0.1 / rooted milestone. Also you get 5 home screens and the new preview tabs for all screens.
Step-By-Step
- Download the new Launcher.apk ( http://sipsik.net/foo/Launcher.apk )
- Save it to sdcard
- Use Root-Explorer to backup the old Launcher.apk from /system/app/Launcher.apk to e.g. /sdcard/backup/Launcher.apk
- Copy the new Launcher.apk to /system/app/Launcher.apk note -> Launcher with a big L not l
- Change the Premissions to 0644 (rw-r–r–)
- Restart phone and enjoy the new launcher with 5 home screens : )

Well, after about 2 months delay, Motorola managed to send out the update for Milestone. Still we’re abit behind the USoA, but anyways…
The Root is still functional, you just have to reapply it after updating to 2.0.1 Those who’re habing trouble reaching the update servers:

Oh, And it seems that motorola is testing the 2.1 / 2.0.2 update for milestone. Pics and Info @Android-Hilfe

Well, it seems that the germans finally did it. They rooted the milestone in collaberation with Androidiani.com

Hihi, and all of that before the 2.0.1 ( :
Simple steps are:
1) Download rename the .zip file to update.zip and save it at the root dir of your SDCard
2) Turn off the Phone
3) Hold The Camera Button and Powerbutton until you see /!\
4) Play with the volume rocker until you get to the menu
5) Select update.zip and Flash away ; )
Since i’m hyper- and radioactive because of this news (and the 8 espressos i drank on my way to work), i’ll try it out right away, local mirror should be available shortly.

Well. The CES week was fun, alot of gadgets sprung up, there were even a few interviews with the Motorola chief, this being an American show, they didn’t mention anything at all about our european version of the DROiD. Today they finally gave us an official word, besides the constant secretive emails and support forum queries. They announced on facebook, that the 2.0.1 update is on the way and 2.1 is also in the works. This is actually good news, for those who want to root it, since with smaller updates (the size of the 2.1 update is still unknown since there are no 2.1 updates available…) we can also include our own unsigned code to the zip. Bringing us closer and closer to the ultimate goal: Rooting (and for me wifi-tethering, since they said that they have no official plans for wifi tethering, thou they sell it as an aoption over the pond.)
Well yeah, finally i have a reason to logon to my facebook account, other than leveling at Mafia Wars:
Attention Android lovers. The 2.01 update is on its way for all Milestone users – watch this space for more info. The Android 2.1 upgrade for MILESTONE is also on its way and will be ready in the next 2 months. We can confirm that DEXT will get the Android 2.1 upgrade as well – once we have the timing for this, will let you know here

Well. Yeah it’s true. Google’s owns “super phone”. The Nexus One, that was announced three days ago supports multitouch only in Europe (Vodafone, is the only announced carrier atm). It’s fun that we Europeans have something that the Americans want but can’t have on the app phone market. Long live the all mighty apple with their patents over the pond : )
Via Heise
HTC also announced their first dumbphone, ironically named the HTC Smart. Wich is running on Qualcoms BREW os. should be fun.
Via Engadget
Oh, and there are some new SonyEricsson handsets on the way, besides the X10. One of them seems to be a mini X10, so. Yeah another ten points for creativity to SE.
Via GSMArena
Last but not least, the Else Emblaze was also demoed at CES ’10, this is probably the only interesting announcement that was made there (yes i’m not into consumer electronics, who cares if you have the thinnest LCD TV, i still have a 26″ CRT TV, since i have no need for an 1080p thingy, why use it if there are no (true) HD-TV senders here in Germany. For my modded x360 you may say? No thanks. I personally see no difference that would justify buying a new TV. If my old one breaks, and i have to buy a new one. Well then yea, since the LCD TV’s are cheaper than the CRT ones.
*gets back on original topic*
So the Emblaze. from specifications it’s not that much different from my Milestone [ A853 ], same processor, a bit smaller display, 3.47″, and features, e.g. 16gb dedicated flash memory in the thing. What’s amazing about this phone is the OS, it’s designed to be used with one hand and it just looks _shiny_ . Also the blue vs. black color scheme is fancy.
Head over to gizmodo to see the full scoop.

Yes… It’s been a crazy few weeks for me, I wanted to update the status of the MiLESTONE / DROiD root.
The good news regarding this is, that Motorola has confirmed that the update is coming in January 2010. Witch means a few more weeks of winter for us European users. It’s fun to see that due to verizons support of the best Google phone (available now, as of dec. 09) leaves the unsupported phone ( MiLESTONE ) with out updates ( The European model also lacks by Google logo on it. It’s just another motorla phone… ffs : ( ) . There are many known bugs, but Motorola officials on moto forum have not said the exact release date for the update, but when i emailed the support they assured me that it’s coming. Just a shame, since the both models are the same, only with a different radio ( oh and did i mention that the European version has _no_ customization at all, so no verizon/amazon apps on the phone, that we PC users call bloat-ware ).
On the other hand, the HTC Passion ( also known as firestone / Google Nexus One), which i also dreamed of instead of the DROiD just like the htc hd2, seems to be coming in January. 500+ USD for the unsubsidized version, a bit better screen than the DROiD [ A855 ] / Milestone [ A853 ] and the all powerful snapdragon 1ghz processor. Only time will tell. There’s an Google Android event on the 5th of January. Maybe only 2.1 update? ( Maybe this is also the reason why Motorola waited? *hint*pray*hint* ). Who knows, Also there will be the CES in january, where motorola is probably gonna introduce the Shoeles tablet version. Fun to see how much has happened in a week. Let’s see what the new year brings ; )
[Update2] Engadget got their own Nexus One to review and the Nexus One rom that has been floating around the internet, has been rooted… confirmed by some of google phone users. Damn.
I can’t wait for it, to all of you, have a _shiny_ new year!
[EDiT] It seems that Motorola is planing a nice 4.3″ touch screen device, unfortunately it’s just unclear which os it will have, since the mock-ups remind me of the old UIQ (SonyEricsson) devices : )
